Victorian Minton & Co Encaustic Tiles with Heraldic Rose Design
SKU: NR10626
Batch of 6 Minton & Co inlaid encaustic tiles by Minton & Co feature a striking heraldic design arranged in a balanced chequerboard pattern. The decoration is divided into four quadrants, with stylised roses occupying opposing corners and finely detailed leafy sprays filling the remaining sections. The result is a pleasing contrast between the bold circular form of the flowers and the more organic movement of the foliage.
The rose motifs bear a strong resemblance to traditional English heraldic emblems such as the Tudor Rose, with layered petals surrounding a textured central seed pod and small pointed sepals highlighted with contrasting details. The opposing leaf motifs consist of three finely veined serrated leaves carried on a slender stem, providing an elegant counterbalance to the floral elements.
The colour palette is typical of nineteenth-century Minton encaustic tiles, combining rich chocolate brown with warm buff and ochre tones set against contrasting cream inlays. This restrained palette gives the design a distinctive Gothic Revival character and allows the floral motifs to stand out clearly.
Originally intended for prestigious Victorian interiors, the design would have been equally at home in entrance halls, churches and country houses. Today these tiles are ideal for repairs and patching into an existing floor. They would also make an attractive fireplace detail, decorative upstand or small splashback, adding a touch of nineteenth-century character to a period interior.
