Victorian Pedestal Washdown Closet, The Forth

SKU: NR07926

A Victorian pedestal toilet, designed at the close of the 19th century when sanitary ware was becoming more refined and more widely adopted. Formed in heavy vitreous earthenware and finished in a bright, high-gloss white glaze, the piece retains a strong, clean surface with good depth and clarity. The bowl and pedestal are defined by crisp, egg and dart moulding, a classical motif that adds structure and visual weight without overcomplicating the design.

Inside the bowl sits a cobalt blue transfer print cartouche reading “The Forth” alongside the original registration number, Rd No 312240. The mark remains clear and well defined, confirming both its origin and its Victorian manufacture of around Circa 1898. This is a washdown design, engineered with a steep-sided bowl and deeper water seal to improve flushing efficiency and hygiene. It represents a clear step forward from earlier closet designs, offering a more direct and effective action. The condition is good. The glaze remains strong and glossy, with light age-related crazing consistent with a piece of this age. There are no obvious structural issues, and it presents well both visually and practically.

A solid and honest example of late Victorian sanitary ware, suitable for period restoration, architectural reuse, or display.
