Antique Wrought Iron and Brass Nursery Fireguard

This box-form fireguard wraps neatly around the fireplace opening, sitting flush to the wall on both sides and enclosing the front completely. Its gently rounded top corners, a signature of nursery-style guards, are complemented by a brass coping along the top rail, softening the profile and removing sharp edges. Small iron hooks at the upper ends can be fixed into the wall or surround to keep the guard secure and upright.

Victorian and Edwardian households used guards like this to create a safe barrier around open hearths, preventing children and pets from reaching flames or hot grates. The frame is crafted from wrought iron vertical bars with a rich, dark patina. Surface wear is consistent with a late nineteenth to early twentieth century origin.
