BRIGHTHELMSTON Place Marker or Boundary Stone, Later known as Brighton

SKU: NR21025

An original carved place marker or boundary stone with BRIGHTHELMSTON inscribed on three faces. Each side is framed with simple pediments, giving the stone a solid and balanced architectural form. Remnants of old flaking paint remain alongside moss and lichen growth,

Stones like this once marked the edges of parish or municipal limits, offering a physical reminder of civic geography in a growing town. The name Brighthelmston is of Anglo-Saxon origin and appears in records as early as the Domesday Book. Brighton was originally an informal shortened form, first recorded in 1660. It gradually replaced the older name in everyday use during the late 18th century, but Brighthelmstone remained the official name of the town until 1810.

This piece offers both historical value and sculptural appeal. Suitable for garden, landscape or heritage-led use. Please view listing images carefully to assess condition.
