Cast Iron Columns 12.5ft by Walter Macfarlane & Co. Set of 4

SKU: NR04726

Four cast iron columns measuring 12.5ft, made in the late nineteenth century by Walter Macfarlane & Co. at the Saracen Foundry, Glasgow. The design can be identified as No. 114 in The Illustrated Catalogue of Macfarlane's Castings. 6th edition Vol 2.

The shafts are plain and cylindrical, a profile widely used in warehouses and shopfronts where load bearing mattered. Each capital carries an octagonal abacus that increases the bearing surface for timber or iron beams. A moulded necking ring marks the transition from shaft to capital, while the faceted bell spreads weight down into the column. The bases are heavy, stepping from square into octagonal before meeting the shaft, with moulded rings bridging the change in section.

The surface shows heavy pitting with traces of Saracen green, white lead primer, and red oxide, consistent with long service. Please see the listing images to assess condition. The last image in is a computer generated illustration of how they might have been used. Please use the actual images to correctly assess the design and condition.
